Aphid farm
I noticed a line of ants
climbing up and down a birch tree. On closer inspection they were 'farming'
aphids way up in the tree. The ants protect the aphids from predators. In
return they get a honey like substance from the aphids. The ants tickle the
aphids with their antennae to encourage the aphid to exude their 'honey'. |
Hoverflies
Sphaerophoria scripta.
These small slender hoverflies
are very common in gardens. Their larvae eat aphids (ants allowing)! |
Scatophagid fly
Related to the dung flies that are often seen on cow pats. There are lots of
these yellow / orange flies around most gardens. Magnified like this they
are impressive looking beasts. |
Hoverfly
Helophilus pendulus
Helophilus is one of the smartest hoverflies. Seen on flowers in gardens
everywhere. Helophilus is an excellent wasp mimic. Presumably this affords
the fly some protection from predators who might mistake it for a genuine
wasp. |
Orb Spider
Araneus diadematus
A
hoverfly meets its very unpleasant death. These large, colourful spiders are
common in late summer and autumn. Araneus spins its large orb webs all
around the garden. |
