Stratiomys potamida - a soldier-fly

A striking fly, Stratiomys potamida is a cumbersome, slow flying denizen of wetlands. Stratiomys larvae live in wet mud around pools, canals and marshes. Until recent years it has been considered a rare fly, but it appears to have increased in numbers. There are several Shropshire records, including this specimen photographed near a small reservoir below The Ercall.

June 2005.
