Red Mason Bee - Osmia rufa

Red Mason Bees emerge early in the spring, from early-mid April onwards. Our photograph shows a male - males emerge first and then regularly return to nest entrances to wait for the emerging females.

Red Mason bees are common in gardens. They will nest in old walls and holes in timber. They appear to be less common outside gardens.
