Shield Bug
Pallomena prasina.
More bugs having nooky!
Actually, it's one of the best times to catch beasts keeping
relatively still - ideal for photography. This shield Bug is very common in
the garden. It lives on a wide range of trees, bushes and herbage. |
Crab Spider
Xysticus cristatus
One of the commonest crab spiders. They lay in wait, keeping very still,
until some unsuspecting fly or other insect ventures near. A quick pounce
and its curtains for the insect, but dinner time for the spider |
Crab Spider
Misumena vatia
This small crab spider can
change colour to match it's surroundings. This usually takes a few days.
This female is standing guard over a batch of eggs it has sown up in the
leaf beneath it. It looks pretty fearsome in close up. Like something from the movies. |
Shield Bug
Eysaricoris fabricii
A rather small shield bug that
colonises Hedge Woundwort - Stachys. There are a bunch of about 10 of
these making their home in my garden Stachys. They feed on the plant,
particularly the seeds. |
Ruby Tailed Wasp
Chrysis species
These small wasps are absolutely stunning in close up. Beautiful shiny reds,
blues greens and bronzes glimmer in the sun-shine. Chrysis lays its eggs in
the nests of solitary bees. The Chrysis larvae eats the bee larvae. Chrysis
has an extremely hard cuticle to protect itself from the host bee, should
she return to her nest while Chrysis is present. |
