Cleg Haematopota crassicornis

This is one of two horseflies often  referred to as Clegs. the females can be a real nuisance in damp woodlands and other damp habitats. They are persistent in their attempts to bite and feed on blood.

The picture shows a male. These do not bite, only feeding from flowers. Note the coloured bands in the eye, an interesting feature of many horsefly species.
