Ferdinandea cuprea -
a hoverfly

Hoverflies are very varied in colour and form. Ferdinadea cuprea is a distinctive looking hoverfly, with a lightly striped thorax, darkly marked wings and brassy abdomen with golden hairs.  It can be found in most woodlands with broadleaved trees present. The larvae are associated with sap runs on trees.

Ferdinandea cuprea has been recorded in many Shropshire woodlands. It's much rarer cousin, F ruficornis, has been recorded in at least two locations.
