Cuckoo Bee
Coelioxys inermis

Coelioxys bees invade the nests of leafcutter bees (Megachile species). They lay eggs in the nest of the host bee, which hatch and then devour the host larvae and food store. Coelioxys inermis is an uncommon bee. The photograph shows a female observed in a Shrewsbury garden.

Female Coelioxys are distinctive looking bees, with sharply triangular shaped abdomens.

Shrewsbury, August 2005.
