Cuckoo Bumblebee
Bombus rupestris

Bumblebees are one of our most familiar insects, but the bumblebee fauna of Shropshire is little known. Several members of SIG are recording them to try and establish their status in the county.

Bombus rupestris is one of the cuckoo bumblebees. It has been considered something of a rarity in the last forty years, but appears to be on the increase now. It has been recorded at least twice in Shropshire since 2004. B rupestris is one of our largest species of bumblebee.

This impressive large female was photographed in woodland near Cound in 2004.
